Clear Indication of the Indwelling Holy Spirit

This is within the broader context of Paul’s assurance about the presence of the Holy Spirit within the life of a believer.
Specific indicator
Specific implication

What do believers do? (vv. 12-13)

Verse 12
They “put to death the deeds of the body...”
Paul is speaking to believers about who they are in Christ/in the Holy Spirit.
“debtors”/ “under obligation” (NASB) - to be obligated to, bound to
We are in a sense bound to live according to the Spirit (vv. 9-11).
It is a great privilege to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit.
But not to the flesh (fallen sin nature) as we once were ().
Believers do not “live according to the flesh” IN THE SAME WAY as they did before… , because they are not longer bound and no longer doomed (vv. 4-5).
Verse 13
“If you are living according to the flesh” in the same way as you once did, in this same sense as those bound, then your end is death.
This is not talking about physical death, because everyone physically dies.
If this is all that you do, because this is all that you are, then you will die (Romans 7:5).
Believers may live according to the flesh at times, but not as debtors.
Believers “put to death” - mortify, kill, execute; present (“putting” NASB), active - IDENTIFY & ELIMINATE
“deeds” - function, act, behaviour; specific, not a general area (like “flesh”)
“body” - physical state prone to sin (6:6, 12; 7:24; 8:10)
This statement is in contrast to “live according to the flesh,” so “flesh” (sin nature) is parallel to “deeds of the body.”
If you are to any degree resisting this, and defeating those deeds, defeating sin, then you must have life.
It is not HOW you gained life now and forever, but it is a sign that you have received life now and forever (Romans 6:21–23).

How do believers do it? (vv. 13-14)

Verse 13
“by the Spirit”
Paul expands on this...
Verse 14
“led” - bring, guide, encourage in a direction, to or away
This is in tune with “by the Spirit… putting to death” (v. 13).
Identifying, and eliminating by leading away from.
This is only true of…
“sons...” - belonging to God’s family
So it is evidence of…
Resisting specific sins in specific moments is only possible by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
So this is a clear indicator of being a child God.

Participation

Specific indicator with a specific implication.
“Putting” (v. 13) is active by the Spirit.
What we can do is what we should do (READ Romans 6:12–14).
Colossians 3:5 (ESV)
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you...
